Kim Bromley-Derry Esq CBE DL

Kim was appointed at the Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Newham in 2022.
Since October 2018 Kim has been the Board Group Director of Community and Partnerships at McLaren Construction and Development Group. Prior to his current role he was the London Borough of Newham’s Chief Executive since 2010. Before becoming Chief Executive at Newham, Kim was an Executive Director of Children’s Services at Newham Council, South Tyneside Council and Leicester City Council leading all aspects of Children and Young people’s services in those local authorities and prior to this has been a senior manager of children’s, adults and social care services in a range of other local authorities.
Kim has represented local government at a national level, for example, he was President of the Association of Director’s of Children’s Services in 2009/10, a member of the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives Leadership Board, a Member of the Government’s Social Work Taskforce, Chair of the government’s National Early Intervention Advisory Board, Chair of the National Inter-agency Group, a Member of the government’s National Adoption and Fostering Leadership Group, a member of the London 2017 World Athletics Championships Board and until October 2018 was Chair of the Government’s National Libraries Taskforce.
Until recently he was a Governor at Newham College of Further Education and was a Non-Executive Board Member of both the National College of Creative Industries and the Creative and Cultural Skills Agency.

Freedom of the Borough of Newham
Former Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Newham, Mr John Barber, received the Freedom of the Borough of Newham. Mr Barber held the Deputy Lieutenant role for the London Borough of Newham from 2007 to 2022.

The Queen’s Jubilee Celebrations

Ron Cannon celebrates 100th year Birthday
The Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Newham, Mr John Barber, presented Mr Ronald Cannon with his 100th-year telegram on the 20th February.
Jack Petchey 2021 Awards
The Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Newham, Mr John Barber, attended the Jack Petchey Awards, where he presented the Jack Petchey award to approximately 70 young people and 6 Leader Award winners from schools in Newham.

Jack Petchey 2020 Awards
Young people across the borough were recognised for their selfless achievements at a virtual awards ceremony on the 7 December. In all, 137 recipients aged 11 to 25 were honoured for their contributions to their school or college community at the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards digital event on December 7. Winners received medallions and framed certificates prior to the online event, along with a £250 grant for them to spend to benefit their school or youth group. They included Forest Gate Community School pupil Emmanuel Toko, 14, in recognition of leadership skills shown by running a sports session at a primary school before the lockdown. Emmanuel continued to be an example to fellow classmates during lockdown through his commitment to remote and in-class learning.

Mr John Barber DL launches the Newham Christmas Toy Appeal with Ambition Aspire Achieve
The Appeal, now in its 43rd year will be run by Ambition Aspire Achieve and the Newham Recorder in conjunction with Community Links and is already receiving more requests for help than in any of the previous 42 years. Every child helped will be experiencing the ravages of poverty with Christmas a particularly challenging time for each family, with money unavailable to provide the gifts and seasonal foods that so many of us take for granted. Please consider helping the 2020 Appeal this year – together we can make a real difference for some of Newham’s most disadvantaged and vulnerable children this Christmas. A series of three short films will take you to hidden parts of the House Mill, a Grade I-listed, eighteenth-century mill and the largest surviving tidal mill in the world. Filmed during lockdown by House Mill volunteers the films explore the magnificent panoramic from the roof of the mill, the pattern store with over 2,660 wooden patterns in their collection and the story of how the mill was saved from demolition.
